# Pyzed > Pyzed is an open-source (MIT) Python framework for building native desktop GUIs. Python describes the interface; Iced, a GPU-accelerated GUI toolkit written in Rust, lays it out and draws it. It aims to be a frontend framework for desktop apps (mobile and web later), with 90+ components whose look is inspired by the Zed editor, themes, node-based GPU shaders, packaging for every desktop platform and Pyzed Design, a drag-and-drop visual designer in the spirit of Visual Basic, Qt Designer and Godot. - Not to be confused with the `pyzed` module of the Stereolabs ZED SDK (`pyzed.sl`, for ZED stereo cameras): Pyzed is a GUI framework, published on PyPI as `pyzed-ui` and named after the Zed editor. - Install: `pip install pyzed-ui` (or `uv add pyzed-ui`); import it as `import pyzed as pz` and `from pyzed import ui`. Python 3.10+, prebuilt wheels for Windows, macOS and Linux. - Model: an `App` subclass with state, `view()` returning a widget tree and callbacks or `update(message)`, like the Elm architecture. Layout, text, syntax highlighting and drawing run in Rust; the GIL is released while the event loop runs. - A modern alternative to tkinter, Kivy, PyQt/PySide, wxPython, Dear PyGui and Flet for desktop tools, dashboards, editors and IDE-like apps, with themes, animation and effects (glow, bloom, glass, blur). - Pyzed Design is a free standalone visual designer (forms saved as `.pzform` plus a Python file); download it from the GitHub releases. - AI agents: `pyzed mcp` (extra `pyzed-ui[mcp]`) is an MCP server that gives coding agents the exact API, these docs, best practices and screenshots; `pyzed.agents` adds model-powered features to your own apps. - Every page is also available as Markdown at the same URL with `.md` instead of the trailing slash (for example https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/getting-started/quickstart.md). The whole English documentation is in https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/llms-full.txt; a shorter version is in https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/llms-small.txt. - Latest stable release: 1.9.0 (https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/changelog/). - GitHub: https://github.com/albakore/pyzed · PyPI: https://pypi.org/project/pyzed-ui/ ## Getting started - [Introduction](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/getting-started/introduction/): What Pyzed is: a Python desktop GUI framework rendered natively by Rust (Iced), with ready-made modern components. How it works and when to use it. - [Installation](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/getting-started/installation/): Install Pyzed with pip or uv on Windows, macOS and Linux. Prebuilt wheels include the Rust engine, so Python 3.10+ is all you need to start. - [Quickstart](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/getting-started/quickstart/): Your first native Python desktop window with Pyzed in five minutes: install the package, write a small counter app and run it anywhere. - [Create a project](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/getting-started/new-project/): Generate a Pyzed desktop app as a standard uv project with one command: the UI in its own folder, plus ruff, ty and git ready to go. ## Tutorials - [Tutorials](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/): Learn Pyzed by building real Python desktop apps step by step, with the visual designer and in code: basic, intermediate and advanced tutorials, each with runnable code. - [A mini code editor](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/advanced/code-editor/): Tutorial: build a code editor in Python with Pyzed: workspace, file tree, tabs, syntax highlighting, saving and a command palette. - [Data binding and validation](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/data-binding/): Bind the controls of a Pyzed Design form to form.data, add validation rules without code, show a live expression in a label, and validate the whole form in one line. - [Your first window in Pyzed Design](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/basic/first-window/): Draw your first desktop window with Pyzed Design, the visual designer: drag controls, set their properties and run the form with F5, without writing code. - [A form that does something](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/basic/first-form/): Build a contact form in Pyzed Design: text boxes, a drop-down and a text area, a Send button wired to Python, a live character counter and messages in the console. - [A game loop](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/advanced/game-loop/): Write a small real-time game with Pyzed: a frame loop with pz.frames, held keys, collisions, glow, particles and screen shake, and a HUD made of ordinary widgets. - [A multi-view app](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/navigation/): Build a Pyzed app with several pages: a sidebar that switches views, tabs inside a page, breadcrumbs and keyboard shortcuts, all driven by one attribute of state. - [A custom shader graph](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/advanced/shader-graph/): Build a GPU shader graph node by node in Python with pyzed.shading: fractal noise, smoothstep bands, a gradient sky, mutable variables driven by sliders, and a .pzshad you can open in Pyzed Design. - [Layout basics](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/basic/layout-basics/): Arrange a Pyzed window with rows, columns, fill, spacing, padding and grids, in Python code and with the flex containers and anchors of Pyzed Design. - [Lists and tables with data](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/lists-tables/): Show Python data in a Pyzed app: a searchable list, a sortable table with clickable rows and custom cells, and a details panel for the selected row. - [Change the theme](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/basic/themes/): Give a Pyzed app another look: pick a bundled theme, change the accent color, follow the system's light or dark mode, or generate your own theme from three colors, in code and in Pyzed Design. - [Connecting a backend](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/advanced/backend/): Connect a Pyzed desktop app to a database: a repository class with SQLite, queries in a background thread with Command.perform, a loading spinner and errors shown instead of crashes. - [Dialogs, notifications and validation](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/dialogs-feedback/): Talk to the user in a Pyzed app: field errors computed from state, a confirmation dialog over the page and toast notifications that disappear on their own. - [5-step tutorial](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/basic/step-by-step/): Learn Pyzed in five steps: go from an empty window to a notes app with Markdown, async work and a second window, in pure Python. - [A custom component](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/custom-component/): Draw a reusable star rating in the Component view of Pyzed Design: a public property, bindings, event handlers, a custom event, and using it in a form and in code. - [Package your app](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/advanced/packaging/): From project to download: create a Pyzed project with uv, build a standalone executable with pyzed build on Windows, macOS and Linux, add an icon and data files, and build every platform in CI. - [Background tasks](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/background-tasks/): Tutorial: run downloads with progress, blocking work and notifications in a Pyzed desktop app without freezing the Python user interface. - [Build an app with the AI agent](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/advanced/ai-agent/): Use the AI agent of Pyzed Design to build a whole desktop app from a description: connect a model, write a good request, follow its plan, review its changes and keep improving the result. - [To-do list](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/basic/todo-app/): Build your first complete Python desktop app with Pyzed: a to-do list with state, forms, lists, filters and keyboard shortcuts. - [A shader effect from the Shader view](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/tutorials/intermediate/shader-effect/): Make an animated GPU background in the Shader view of Pyzed Design from a template, tweak its nodes and variables, and put it behind a form whose buttons change it. ## Guides - [Stability and known limitations](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/guides/stability/): What Pyzed 1.x promises about its Python API, how features are deprecated over releases, and what the framework does not do yet. ## Animation - [Animation](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/): How animation works in Pyzed: animate any widget like the web (presets, keyframes, transitions), move many widgets on one timeline like Godot's AnimationPlayer, and edit clips in Pyzed Design. - [Start here: apply and play](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/start/): The two things every Pyzed animation needs: which widget it moves (animate() on the widget) and what starts it (a trigger, your code, a timeline). Declarative and imperative examples, in classes, components and plain functions, and the same in Pyzed Design. - [animate() and triggers](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/animate/): widget.animate() in Pyzed: play a preset or your own animation when a widget appears, on hover, press, focus or click, or while a flag is on, with duration, delay, repeat, direction, fill and easing. - [Animatable properties](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/properties/): Every property a Pyzed animation can change: opacity, position, scale, rotation, blur, colors, radius, border, glow, size, padding and font size, with their units and how property values animate. - [Keyframes and easing](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/keyframes/): Write your own Pyzed animations with pz.Animation keyframes (like CSS @keyframes), give each step its own easing, name and save them, and pick easing curves: ease, cubic, back, bounce, spring, Bézier and steps. - [Transitions and states](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/transitions/): Animate changes in Pyzed like CSS: widget.transition() moves to new values, hover and pressed style states animate, pz.presence swaps pages with enter and exit animations, pz.stagger cascades lists, and windows open with transitions. - [Preset gallery](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/presets/): Every named animation preset in Pyzed, playing: entrances, exits, attention seekers, hover and press feedback, and loops, with their durations and when to use them. - [Effects](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/effects/): Visual effects in Pyzed: opacity, rotation, blur, backdrop blur, glow, bloom, glass, translate and scale as style properties, and which of them animations can change. - [Timeline animations](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/timeline/): Animate many widgets and your app's state on one timeline with clips, tracks, keys and method calls, like Godot's AnimationPlayer: interpolation, easing per key, loops and attribute tracks. - [The animation player](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/player/): pz.AnimationPlayer plays Pyzed timeline clips: play, pause, resume, stop, seek, play backwards, speed, queues and events, and saves reusable clips in .pzanim libraries. - [Reduced motion, tests and limits](https://albakore.github.io/pyzed/animation/motion-and-tests/): Respect the system's reduce-motion setting in Pyzed, test animated views and timeline clips, take stable screenshots, and know the limits of the animation system. ## Why Pyzed - [Why Pyzed?
